Unit 8

Reflection Unit 8

Producing and Evaluating Critical Writing: Part 2

This unit continues to focused on produce and evaluate critical writing. We need to write a critical review and exchanged it with a partner, and then we have a chance to comment on his or her critical review, at the same time, our own critical review is being critique.

The difficult part in this unit is to evaluate our partner’s critical review. We need to critically analyze the critical review before we can start comment about it. We need to state whether the critical review has any weakness, or whether it was completed or partially done.

At the same time, it was also interesting to evaluate others’ critical review because we can learn another skill in critical literacy as well as make us understand well on the previous and the current unit. We also could find some format differences between this unit and the previous one.

Comment on Group Presentation

The presentation for unit 8 was done by Nurul Mardiana, Ili Izlin Hanim, and Tun Amirah Athirah. The presentation focused on how to produce a critical writing and evaluation according to the formats and guidelines in the Study Guide. The presentation really makes me understand how to do the final task.

Unit 7

Reflection Unit 7

Producing and Evaluating Critical Writing: Part 1

Unit 7 is the stage two of the course. The format of the unit changes at this point. The most obvious change is that the length of each unit is different. The second difference is in the shape of the unit. The task required greater autonomy and the texts are more academic. Another difference is the introduction of critical reviews and commentary. In this unit, we focused on developing our skills to produce and evaluate critical writing.

In this unit, we learned something new, which are producing a critical writing. It is really interesting since we have done learning how to read a text and think critically afterward.

At first, I found that it is quite difficult to do a critical writing because the format is different from the previous unit. However, I managed to understand it after the explanation in class session. In this unit, we need to find an article and write critical review based on the article. Since the format is different from previous unit, it is kind of difficult to write a critical review. In previous unit, we use point form in our task but in critical review, we must do it in paragraph. The texts are also longer than the previous task.

Comment on Group Presentation

This unit was presented by Wan Zahidah, Mariam Aishah and Amira Syafinaz. They present how to do a critical writing and evaluate it and it was easy to understand the presentation. The presentation helps me in understanding the format of producing a critical writing.

Unit 5

Reflection Unit 5

Audience and Impact

Before speculating on the impact of a text, we have to establish the nature of its possible audience. This unit focuses on what are the possible impacts of the article to the audience. In the unit, we learned that it is important to realize that we cannot be certain about who will be the reader and what the impacts of the text are. This is because texts often circulate throughout society and each society has different point of view as well as individuals.

The key questions asked in this unit are who the intended audience is and what is the likely impact of the text on the audience. The rest of the unit clarified these questions trough tasks that developed our ability to identify audience and assess likely impact.

The interesting part in this unit is the terminology, which are also the difficult part to understand. The terminology that used in this unit are exposition, thesis, analytical exposition, hortatory exposition, objective, subjective and metaphor. The meanings of these words are given in the glossary in Critical Literacy: Study Guide book. We also learn the terminology like polysemy, cognitive, reification, nominalization, metonymy, abstract, analogue, and heterogenous. The meaning of these words also included in the glossary and it was discussed in the class with the subject lecturer, Sir Humamudin Abu Samah.

Comment on Group Presentation

For unit 5, the presenters are Nadia, Syahida Suhana, and Farah Aida. The presentation was focuses on the impacts to the audiences. They used an article from a magazine as a sample to make us understand about impact to the audience. The method are really works, we can easily understand what they are trying to say.
